Versatile Julian Edelman Ready For His Biggest Role?

Julian Edelman figures to be Brady’s primary target against Jets

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman catches

But just more than nine months later, it was Edelman, the former-college-quarterback-turned-receiver-turned-temporary-defensive-back-turned-receiver, who kept the New England Patriots ‘ offense afloat during an otherwise forgettable night. Julian played well, made some tough catches and did a good job on punt returns, coach Bill Belichick said following his teams 13-10 win over the New York Jets on Thursday night. He played hard like he always does, hes a tough kid and I thought he made a lot of tough catches, too, in the second half. Edelman finished with a career-best 13 catches for the evening, bringing his season total to 20, one fewer than he had in all of 2012. Although indications suggested the Patriots would be without top target Danny Amendola , who is currently dealing with a groin injury, it wasnt until 90 minutes before kickoff that official word came out that Amendola would indeed be inactive. It was at that point that Edelman vaulted to the top of the receiving corps, a first for the former seventh-round pick. I wasnt even thinking about that, Edelman said of taking on a new role as the top receiver.

Im not trying to replace Welker, he said. Weve seen Julian do a lot of different things for us, said Bill Belichick. Hes returned kicks, hes covered kicks, hes played defense, hes run with the ball, hes caught the ball. He has a lot of different skills and weve used him in a lot of different ways with the ball in his hands. Versatility is definitely one of his strengths. Hes a tough kid, hes a good competitor, he has good body strength, hes got some speed, and hes got quickness. Hes got a lot of things going for him. Edelman might be thrust into a starring gig against the Jets. Tight end Rob Gronkowski (back/forearm) isnt expected to play, Shane Vereen (wrist) was placed on injured reserve and will miss at least the next eight games, and Danny Amendola, like Gronkowski, is doubtful, with a groin injury.

What is Julian Edelman’s Role in New England Patriots Offense Once Danny Amendola Is Back?

In that game Amendola got the targets and catches over Edelman, but Edelman got more red zone looks. Amendola is the starter in the slot and Edelman is the backup, but with them both healthy will the Patriots just play both WRs since Tom Brady seems to be comfortable with both guys? Edelman has done nothing but shine in Amendolas absence, and as long as he is healthy he needs to be on the field. The Patriots run a lot of three or four receiver sets, so they both will be on the field a lot. Once Rob Gronkowski comes back as well, the two little slot receivers could become a nightmare for opposing defenses. Everyone knows what Gronk is and he will demand game plans against him, but while teams are game planning for Gronk, Amendola and Edelman could run wild all over the field.

The staff “ejected the witness followed by the victim,” the complaint said. The nightclub manager told police the witness was threatening to beat up Edelman on the dance floor. Edelman was arrested outside the club, where he denied to police that he groped the woman. Edelman did not say anything during the court appearance, which lasted just a couple of minutes. He and his attorney, Amy McNamee, walked through a crowd of reporters outside the courtroom without addressing them. The Patriots issued a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Patriots’ Julian Edelman arrested

But Bundchen, her husband and Patriots fans now must surely miss Welker, who signed with Denver as a free agent. Brady pulled out a win in the opener at Buffalo, completing 29 of 52 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, but 17 of those completions went to players who will miss Thursday night’s game against the Jets at Gillette Stadium. Danny Amendola, a free agent signed to replace Welker, caught 10 passes at Buffalo but is listed as doubtful with a groin injury. Running back Shane Vereen, who had seven catches, is on injured reserve with a wrist injury. That leaves fifth-year wide receiver Julian Edelman as the most reliable receiver in Brady’s arsenal. As a rookie in 2009, Edelman stepped in for an injured Welker and caught eight passes for 98 yards in a 16-9 loss to the Jets in the second game of that season. “That was a long time ago,” Edelman said. “I’m not really thinking about that.

Super Bowl 2012: Patriots’ Julian Edelman will be busy Sunday

Julian Edelman, right, has lined up as a punt returner, wide receiver and defensive back for New England this season.

Im more focused on doing my job, and thats preparing right now. But Edelman said he doesnt think opposing offenses have targeted him this season. I dont think Ive had that many [passes] caught on me, he said. Not that Im doing such a great job. But the coaches have done a great job helping me out with the scheme and preparing me each week for what I have to focus on, instead of focusing on the big picture of the defense. Edelman, who is listed at 5 feet 10 and 198 pounds, played quarterback in junior college and then at Kent State, but drew little interest from NFL teams at that position. He passed up an opportunity to play quarterback in the Canadian Football League. I wasnt mad that people said I couldnt play quarterback, he said. It was kind of the transition of what I needed to do. Im 5-10 and this is the NFL. Theres only one guy thats done it and thats Doug Flutie.

Julian Edelman, Tim Tebow Among Last Players to Make Patriots in Mid-Training Camp 53-Man Roster Projection

That means that football season is finally creeping up. Watching eight practices has given NESN.com NFL writers Doug Kyed and Luke Hughes more than enough to see which players have the best chances of making the Patriots 53-man roster out of the preseason. There have been certain players, like Kenbrell Thompkins and Marcus Benard, that have been surprise performers in training camp. While their chances to make the roster back in June and July looked slim, theres a reason theyre getting increased reps in practice. One of the biggest decisions Bill Belichick and company will have to make in late August will be whether or not to keep Tim Tebow. Kyed and Hughes are split on the decision. Check out how NESN.com thinks the 53-man roster will look before any preseason games are played.

Gronkowski, Amendola, Ridley Questionable For Patriots

Predicting Danny Amendola’s Fantasy Stats for Remainder of 2013 Season

There are no comments yet. Get the conversation started by leaving the first comment

We put all this time and this effort in, put our bodies on the line for five hours. Essentially, something needs to happen so somebody wins. That’s just how I feel about it. Well what if they said they were trying to limit the amount of football you guys play to not have your bodies take too much of a beating? I don’t care. Then have a shoot-off or something. Like a shootout in soccer — a field-goal kicking competition? Yeah, something. I’d rather something happen for us to decide the winner of the game.

Gronkowski, who was limited in practice all week, has yet to play this season after a series of surgeries on his fractured forearm and ailing back. Amendola returned to action last week after missing three games with a groin injury. The Texas Tech product has caught 14 passes for 159 yards in two games this season. Ridley missed last Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to knee and thigh injuries. The LSU product has carried the ball 47 times for 174 yards in four games this season. Veteran defensive tackle Tommy Kelly (knee) and running back Leon Washington (ankle) have been ruled out. Running back Brandon Bolden (knee), wide receiver Matthew Slater (wrist), center Ryan Wendell (concussion) and defensive back Tavon Wilson (hamstring) were listed as questionable. All were limited participants in Friday’s practice.

Danny Amendola agrees with Patriots

However, let’s break it down and see where he may fall when this campaign is all said and done. Amendola has had plenty of injury woes the past few seasons after playing in just 12 games from 2011 to 2012. This season has been no different as Amendola has suited up for just one game in 2013-14, and that was the season-opener against the Buffalo Bills . However, things are looking up for Amendola this week, as NFL .com’s Ian Rapoport has tweeted that Amendola looks “good to go” for the Pats’ Week 5 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals as he returns from a groin injury: Clarity on #Patriots WR Danny Amendola: Source tells me he’s “good to go.” Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 6, 2013 When he’s on the field, he’s as deadly a slot receiver as there is in the NFL. In that Week 1 win for New England, Amendola caught 10 passes for 104 yards. It gave fantasy owners a lot of hope that Amendola was primed to have a big season, but then came the injury. He may be healthy enough to go this week, but next week and beyond is never guaranteed for Amendola.

Patriots WR Danny Amendola will play vs. Bengals

Amendola initially took his route to the outside — the traffic made it challenging for the Bills defensive backs — before rounding it in and snaring a laser from Brady as he was crunched by safety Aaron Williams . Patient “angle” route, big-time throw, gutsy catch in traffic. “I thought Danny stepped up and made some big catches in some tough situations,” coach Bill Belichick said. “Tom, as always, competed like he always does. He made some great throws in critical times.” Indeed, on a day when the Patriots weren’t at their best — the revamped offense endured some growing pains, running back Stevan Ridley was benched after a second-quarter fumble and kicker Stephen Gostkowski converted a game-winning 35-yard field goal with five seconds remaining — the Brady-to-Amendola connection trumped it all. No one is saying that there aren’t concerns for the Patriots with what unfolded. It was ugly, at times, for a team that prides itself on taking care of the football to be sloppy.

Danny Amendola injury update: Fantasy owners looking to cash in on patience

Large_sb_nation_final

“Were out there practicing and running around, trying to get on the same page, regardless of who it is, and well be ready to go when our number is called, for sure.” Still missing from the offense are tight end Rob Gronkowski and running back Shane Vereen. Gronkowski (back/forearm) could be back this Sunday against unbeaten New Orleans; Vereen (wrist) is on the injured reserve list with a designation to return, and can come back no sooner than the Nov. 18 game at Carolina. Amendola caught four passes against the Bengals, but the Patriots struggled on offense, failing to score a touchdown for the first time since 2009. Asked for a health update, Amendola sounded positive. “I feel good,” he said. “I had a good day today, and Im just preparing this week, getting ready to go for next Sunday. Just continue to do what the trainers and training staff ask, thats all I can do.” He has been practicing, as has Gronkowski. Getting the tight end back should provide the offense with a big spark.

Pats’ Danny Amendola, Stevan Ridley expected to play

Excited to get to work. Go Pats,” Amendola tweeted Wednesday night. Amendola’s agreement comes hours after Welker left the Patriots for a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos . That deal is worth $12 million, sources told Schefter. The 27-year-old Amendola finished last season with 63 receptions for 666 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games for the St. Louis Rams . He missed virtually all of the 2011 season after dislocating his left elbow in the opener, and then injuring a triceps muscle after returning to practice. In 2011, Amendola played under then-offensive assistant coach Josh McDaniels, who is now the Patriots’ offensive coordinator. Amendola has 196 receptions for 1,726 yards and seven touchdowns in 42 career games. Amendola previously has been compared to Welker because of their elusiveness and ability to play in the slot.

Danny Amendola eager to get everyone healthy

Friend(s) Email More Columns > It’s been awhile since the New England Patriots had good injury news. On Friday, they got good news and bad news. Why do you love football? NFL Media’s Albert Breer said Friday on “Around the League Live” that running back Stevan Ridley and wide receiver Danny Amendola both are expected to suit up Sunday against the New Orleans Saints . But it ” doesn’t look like ” tight end Rob Gronkowski will play because of his forearm injury, Breer reported. All three players are listed as questionable, but Ridley is ready to return from his knee injury. Amendola (groin) played in last week’s game and looked good; Breer will have more information on his status on Sunday’s “NFL GameDay Morning” on NFL Network. Gronkowski has not yet been cleared to return to the field by Dr. James Andrews, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

(USATSI) With a host of banged-up receivers who are questionable to play Sunday vs. the Bengals and with tight end Rob Gronkowski officially out of the lineup once again, the Patriots have some good news regarding Danny Amendola . Fantasy Football Advice Fantasy Football Today has answers As in, he’ll play for the first time since Week 1, the team announced. The news would be welcome. Amendola was supposed to replace the production of departed receiver Wes Welker , and in Week 1, Amendola was impressive, catching 10 passes for 104 yards. Some of that came after he suffered the groin injury that has kept him out since.

Danny Amendola fits right in

We break down the fantasy implications. He is fully expected to play after being limited in practice all week. He’s going to other play; this is just more of the Patriots up to their usual tricks on the injury report. He was targeted nine times in Week 5, catching five balls for 55 yards in the loss to the Bengals . Cincy shut down the Patriots offense, so his line isn’t as bad as you’d think. The Patriots really have lacked a go-to guy for much of the season. Rob Gronkowski is still hurt and Amendola’s groin has really limited him. Their young receivers of Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson haven’t been able to haul in passes for much of the season, and it’s cost Tom Brady some of his usually efficient numbers. Fantasy impact: If you’re in a PPR league, you kind of have to play Amendola.

Andre Tippett To Announce Patriots’ Second Round Draft Picks

It was the image of a linebacker named Andre Tippett, a linebacker so savage that even with his team losing to Shula`s by 21 points, he could not go unnoticed. “I`ll tell you who`s going to be a terrific player in this league,“ Shula said. “That Tippett they have. That kid is an outstanding young linebacker. He does so many things. “We were lucky in preparing for this game because we had (Charles) Bowser, who had the same number (56) and we had him lining up and running all around during practice doing the things Tippett does. You`ll hear more from that kid.“ By the end of 1984, quarterbacks from coast to coast had heard from Tippett 18 1/2 times, giving him the leading sack total by an NFL linebacker. Although he played for a team that failed to reach the playoffs, Tippett`s peers heard enough to vote him to the Pro Bowl for the first time.

The Patriots hold two second round draft picks, numbers 33 and 60 overall. Barring any trades by Bill Belichick, Tippett will have two opportunities to address Pats fans on stage. Tippett was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 1999 and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. Tippett was a second round draft pick (40th pick overall) by the Pats in 1982 and the linebacker out of Iowa went on to finish his 12 year career with a Patriot record 100 sacks. He played his entire NFL career with New England and was a five-time Pro Bowler.

Arlington High School’s John Dubzinski named Patriots High School Coach of the Week

Thank you for teaching me perseverance. Life wasn’t easy for us, moving from Birmingham, Ala., to Newark, N.J., with not much more than the clothes on our back.” Tippett explained that he learned to be accountable for his actions because his mother “ruled with love and a whole lot of discipline.” Then, looking off the stage to his right, where a group of more than 275 family members and friends were seated, Tippett told his mother that he loved her. Calling family “the most important ingredient” in his life, Tippett also delivered emotional words to his wife, Rhonda, and his children, Janea, Asia, Madison, and Coby. A tone-setter on the field, where he totaled 100 career sacks, Tippett was the tone-setter for last night’s festivities, speaking first at 6:48 p.m., followed by fellow inductees Emmitt Thomas, Fred Dean, Darrell Green, Gary Zimmerman, and Art Monk. Wearing thick black-rimmed glasses and a red, white, and blue necktie (Patriots colors), Tippett was introduced by Patriots owner Robert Kraft and shared an embrace with him before his speech. Tippett led off his remarks by thanking Kraft and his family for hiring him when he retired.

Now, that’s an image I’ll never forget that the rest of my life. What impressed me most that day was his graciousness. Hearing him talk about the love of the martial arts and the discipline required to excel at karate, I started to understand and appreciate how he was able to maintain his individual excellence. My second meeting with Andre only served to underscore the depth of his character. It was in 1989, at Mass General Hospital where Andre was recovering from surgery. I saw Andre in the hospital and I was flattered that he remembered me. He asked me why I was there, and I told him I was visiting my son, David, who had just suffered a very serious knee injury that had ended his wrestling season.

“Hawk usually can block anyone, but I wouldn’t put Frank Hawkins and a tank against him,” Lawrence said of Tippett. “I wouldn’t want to block him, but I have to.” Tippett led the Patriots that day with nine tackles, and the Raiders fumbled their way out of the playoffs. The Jets tried to block Tippett with tight end Mickey Shuler. On one play, Tippett snatched Shuler, moved him sideways three yards, blew into the backfield, forearmed a second blocker out of the way and slammed quarterback Ken O’Brien to the turf. “If he gets his hands on your pads, it’s over,” Shuler said. When those teams met again in the wild-card playoff game, Tippett knocked O’Brien out of the game with a concussion.

His 11-year career with the Patriots began in 1982. Tippett earned the reputation as a hard-hitting linebacker on defense and helped New England reach the Super Bowl in 1985. He played in five consecutive Pro-Bowls from 1985 to 1989, and, at his retirement, held team records for career sacks with 100, sacks in one season with 18.5 and recovered fumbles from opponents in a season with 17. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 1980s and was induced to the NFL Hall of Fame last year. He is just the seventh player with ties to New Jersey to earn that recognition. “This is about the kids and people who live here in the community,” Barringer High School Principal Jose Aviles. Joining Aviles at the dedication were members of the Barringer Boys Soccer Team, who will be utilizing the field beginning this fall.

“There were a lot of teams that had him off the board,” said an NFL personnel executive. But with the Patriots, Hernandez has been little problem for the team. At times the team had a tough time corralling him as far as staying focused on the field, but nothing beyond that. “He really is a great kid at heart,” said one former teammate. “He was a great teammate, just loves football. Won’t find many guys who practiced harder.” Independently, both a former and current New England teammate said that they believed Hernandez was having some trouble with his past associates and was seeking distance from them.

Sharing Some Jerod Mayo Thoughts

Jerod Mayo once again in middle of Patriots’ defense

Sometimes they are reached in situations like these (e.g. Warren, Dan Koppen, Mayo etc.) and sometimes they aren’t and players have to wait longer for their big deal (e.g. Vince Wilfork, Logan Mankins etc.). What it means for Welker. There is nothing that says the Patriots couldn’t lock up both Mayo and receiver Wes Welker to contract extensions, but at this point, nothing is imminent with Welker, according to sources. Given that the Patriots and Welker have not been able to come to an agreement, it’s easy to envision a scenario in which the Patriots were motivated to work harder with some of their other players in line for extensions, starting with Mayo. The Patriots know they have the franchise tag to use on Welker as well.

Jerod Mayo: Patriots Maintaining ‘Next Man Up’ Mentality After Vince Wilfork’s Injury

Im pretty much just watching what were doing out here. Im not really watching the opponents right now, Im just watching our problem plays and whats given us problems in the past years, Mayo said. Its a different team this year than it was last year and years past this team will be good at some things and well have to improve in other things. Despite some rookies rotating in, as well as veteran newcomers fitting into the system, Mayo seems pleased with what hes seen. Im seeing guys out there flying around, having a good time playing football, he said. Thats all you can ask go out there and have fun and at the same time execute, communicate, which is always a challenge, especially when you have new guys on the team, communication, just have to get better at that. Even in the first days of camp, the defense has been spirited, particularly when the first unit is up against Brady and the first-team offense in red-zone situations. Mayo noted the mix of players with different levels of experience, then singled out safety Adrian Wilson as a great addition. After joking that Wilson brings a set of biceps Devin McCourty has nicknamed the chiseled Wilson the Incredible Hulk Mayo says the former Cardinal just brings that experience, some different philosophies, how to do different things but at the same time playing within the scheme.

Jerod Mayo taking lead for Patriots’ defense

We always talk about next man up, Mayo said in a conference call on Monday. We have a lot of talented guys on our team. I think Vince got hurt in the first quarter yesterday and guys really stepped up and played well for us. We ended up getting the victory, which is always is a good thing. Thats our mentality the next man up. Im sure we have a lot of great people, great players, great leaders in the organization in general so I know I expect that to continue on. Wilfork left Sunday nights game on the opening drive, and he didnt return. The Pats defense limited the Falcons for much of the game, though the D needed a red zone stand in the final minutes to secure the victory.

Scots star John Hannah admits Spartacus show shocked his dad so much he didn’t recognise his own son

Whitfield played the title role in the gladiator-themed TV show, but was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma last year (10) resulting in a delay in production on the second series. Producers turned their attentions to a prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, to allow Whitfield time to recover, but the cancer returned and he was forced to pull of out season two. He was replaced by Liam MCIntyre. Hannah, who plays Spartacus’ master in the series, admits he was devastated to hear Whitfield’s bad news and hopes he will bounce back once he recovers. He tells Scotland’s Daily Record, “Andy has to focus on his recovery. I feel for him because he was on the verge of stardom. But I’m sure he’ll be back.” Contactmusic

But for Scots star John Hannah, it wasn’t the violence and sex that drew to him to the part of Batiatus. Having played everything from a cop to a gangster, John, who just turned 51 this week, admits he was delighted to do something new. He said: “Spartacus was very different. There was no cops in it or car chases. No hospitals or lawyers. I had only read the first episode, as is the way with these shows, and while the content was quite a shock there was something incredibly interesting about the writing that took it beyond the ultra-violence and sex. “Some of it may have pushed the envelope but when you’re dealing with life and death, and you see the way TV has progressed, it has to reflect the age it’s produced in.

John Hannah – John Hannah Feels For Cancer-stricken Whitfield

There are no protective publicists in the room, or the usual list of question restrictions. Instead, the only slight change made to the interview schedule is to enable Hannah to pick up some antibiotics. It’s all very un-movie star, despite his appearance in what Universal Pictures hopes will be one of the summer’s blockbuster films – The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, part three in the hit Mummy franchise, which sees Hannah reprising his role as bumbling opportunist Jonathan Carnahan. The first film was made nine years ago and seemed, at the time, a rather odd choice for a man who, following his breakthrough role in Four Weddings And A Funeral in 1994, was making a name as either a handsome romantic lead – think Sliding Doors opposite Gwyneth Paltrow – or a brooding type, such as the eponymous pathologist in the 1995 TV series McCallum. For all its special effects, The Mummy is rather slapstick, and no character more so than Hannah’s. ‘I must admit, I was initially reluctant about it,’ he says. ‘I’d never done anything slapstick like that and I was scared I wouldn’t be able to pull it off.

Tom Brady Calls Ex-pats Deion Branch, Brandon Lloyd

Updated: Sept. 22, 2013 at 06:19 p.m. Friend(s) Email More Columns > The New England Patriots ‘ front office has shown no desire to add any veteran wide receivers to the mix despite the struggles of rookie pass catchers Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins . Their starting quarterback, however, is keeping up with old friends. NFL Media columnist Mike Silver and NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Tom Brady has been calling and texting former Patriots receivers Deion Branch and Brandon Lloyd, per sources directly involved in the situation. Branch is ready to play if the Patriots call. Lloyd has said he’s not quite ready to play. (Although he was ready to act in a straight-to-DVD zombie movie .) Brady often has pointed out he doesn’t make the personnel decisions in New England.

WR Deion Branch looking for wins, not attention

No, I havent talked to those guys in a while, Brady said. I love both of them, theyre good friends and great teammates but I havent talked to either one of them in a while. Rapoport tweeted early Sunday that Deion Branch has told Tom Brady hes ready whenever, hanging in Kentucky. Brandon Lloyd isnt yet. But he is acting in zombie movies. The last comment is in reference to Lloyds latest career venture, acting in a straight-to-DVD film titled After Effect, which stars Daniel Baldwin ( plenty of more info on that film is right here ). Last season, in his one year in New England, Lloyd had 74 receptions for 911 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile Branch, 34, remains a free agent.

Deion Branch calls Aaron Hernandez ‘great friend’ and ‘great teammate’

Aaron is a great guy and a great friend of mine and a great teammate, Branch told The Herald. I love him to death, and it was shocking to hear his name involved in this situation. I truly hope and pray he doesnt have any dealings with it. The Patriots have totally disassociated themselves with Hernandez, even going so far as to offer fans the chance to exchange Hernandez jerseys for new ones after the team released him. And most of the stories about Hernandez over the past couple weeks have not painted him in a positive light. But Branch, while showing respect to the Lloyd family and saying he hopes whoever killed Lloyd is brought to justice, expressed surprise that Hernandez could be involved. Thats my guy, man, Branch told The Herald.

Branch was 21 years old when his twin boys, Deiondre and Deiontey, were born in Louisville, Ky. Small but strong, the twins toughed out two weeks in intensive care before coming home from the hospital. But six days later, Deiondre would be back. “He wasn’t eating. And he’d cry when you picked him up,” said Branch, recalling the new-parent panic that prompted a late-night trip to the emergency room. A series of tests revealed Deiondre had meningitis, inflammation in the lining of his nervous system triggered by a viral infection .

Deion Branch ‘shocked’ after Aaron Hernandez arrest

Updated: July 1, 2013 at 07:39 p.m. Friend(s) Email More Columns > Retired offensive tackle Matt Light said last week that he “never embraced” the lifestyle led by Aaron Hernandez prior to the first-degree murder charge filed against the former New England Patriots tight end. Among former teammates, though, Light’s opinion was not unanimous. Free agent Deion Branch, who played with Hernandez for two and a half seasons, said he was “shocked” to hear about the case against Hernandez in connection to the death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd. Former teammates have been silent, for the most part, but former Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch told the Albany Herald he isn’t ready to abandon his friend even though prosecutors have laid out a convincing case. Hernandez, who pleaded not guilty, is being held without bail for the killing of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd. ANOTHER NFL ARREST: Gun charges for Colts safety “Aaron is a great guy and a great friend of mine and a great teammate,” Branch told the Georgia newspaper. “I love him to death, and it was shocking to hear his name involved in this situation. I truly hope and pray he doesn’t have any dealings with it.” Branch, a free agent, has been working out in Indianapolis with former Colts receiver Austin Collie in hopes of extending an 11-year career, but putting his name in headlines as a Hernandez supporter isn’t likely to help Branch find a team. Nevertheless, Branch is sticking by his buddy. He made the comments during his eighth annual Skills and Drills camp at Albany State University on Saturday.

Former Pats WR Deion Branch stands by Aaron Hernandez

It really shocked me. He was a great kid. Overall, I hope the best that he isn’t involved with it and I hope he gets his name cleared, but most importantly I send my prayers and condolences out to the Lloyd family.” RELATED NEWS Pats offer free exchange for Hernandez jerseys “I love (Hernandez) to death, and it was shocking to hear his name involved in this situation,” Branch also said. “I truly hope and pray he doesn’t have any dealings with it. Hernandez was denied bail and will remain behind bars until his trial. Authorities also have two other men — 27-year-old Carlos Ortiz and 41-year-old Ernest Wallace — in custody for their alleged role in Lloyd’s death. Nobody deserves to walk, whoever the person is that did it, Branch added. Most of all what we as Americans need to understand is that is somebody’s child that was a victim. That’s somebody’s dad, and my prayers and thoughts go out to his family and hope that they bring whoever did this to their child to justice, regardless of who it is. Hernandez is also under investigation for a 2012 double-killing in Boston. Authorities believe the 2012 killings and the recent death of Odin Lloyd could be related.

But it was Branch, who caught nearly half of them, who was MVP after tying a Super Bowl record with 11 receptions. Then, after one more season, he was gone, traded during a contract dispute after the opening game of the 2006 season to Seattle for a draft choice. Brady was devastated to lose his friend and the receiver who could adjust his planned route with just a pre-snap glance from his quarterback. Then he felt much better when Branch made the cross-country trip back for a reunion. The Patriots obtained Branch in a trade on Oct. 12, 2010 for a fourth-round draft choice to replace Randy Moss, who was traded to Minnesota. Branch had 48 catches in 11 games with New England last season and another 51 in 15 games this season. But Welker led the NFL with 122 receptions, Gronkowski set a league single-season record for tight ends with 17 touchdown catches and Hernandez, a tight end versatile enough to make big plays at wide receiver and running back, had 79 receptions. Welker has caught at least 111 passes in four of his five years with the Patriots.

Ex-Pat Deion Branch defends Aaron Hernandez: ‘Aaron is a great guy’

Branch, who spent seven seasons with the Patriots and lives across the street from Hernandez in North Attleborough, Mass., told the Albany Herald that Hernandez is a great guy and he was shocked to hear of the murder charge. Branchs comments to the Herald during his eighth annual Skills and Drills camp offer an opposing view to those of former Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light, who said earlier this week that teammates never embraced Hernandez. From the report: Aaron is a great guy and a great friend of mine and a great teammate, Branch told The Herald I love him to death, and it was shocking to hear his name involved in this situation. I truly hope and pray he doesnt have any dealings with it. On Saturday, Branch didnt have anything negative to say about Hernandez. Thats my guy, man, Branch said of Hernandez. Thats my guy. It really shocked me. He was a great kid. Overall, I hope the best that he isnt involved with it and I hope he gets his name cleared, but most importantly I send my prayers and condolences out to the Lloyd family. Branch said there was nothing in his association with Hernandez on or off the field that led him to believe he was capable of murder, but details recently emerging from Hernandezs past seem to suggest otherwise.

Mccoy: Woodhead’s An Every-down Back

Pats’ Danny Woodhead is just like us, and that’s why we root for him

Theres games where guys will get more touches than others, depending on the flow of the game. And youre going to do whatever you think is best to win the game. McCoy said hes fine with the teams depth at running back if Mathews is unavailable this week. Ronnie Brown is the teams only other tailback on the active roster. Fullback Le’Ron McClain also could be used to spell Woodhead. And Miguel Maysonet was added to the teams practice squad last week. San Diego has a couple other injured players that will have to heal up this week.

No running backs have seen more targets in the passing game, and in this offense, he should continue to lead the pack. We all know thatPhilip Rivers doesnt exactly chuck the ball downfield anymore. In fact, he is one of six quarterbacks this year to have more than half of their passes travel less than five yards, which is prime real estate for Woodhead. Also, head coachMike McCoyhas a history of utilizing his running backs in the passing game quite a bit. Last year with Denver, his running backs were targeted 14.4 percent of the time, and the year before that, 18.4 percent. Meanwhile, the Chargers offensive line isnt exactly the best, and Rivers has been known to check it down to his backs over the years. San Diego running backs were targeted a whopping 30 percent of the time a season ago.

Patriots’ Danny Woodhead, who’s been beating the odds all his life, looking to beat his former team

Freshman year, in his first game he gained more than 300 yards. Second year, word began to travel: Who is this kid? After the third year, when he’d averaged more than 200 yards per game, he won the Harlon Hill Trophy, the Division II Heisman. By the end of his fourth year, when he won the trophy again, he’d set the alltime yardage record for the NCAA in any division. He and his brothers twisted the football off the top of one of his Harlon Hill trophies and used the base as a stool for three-way video game tournaments. Which more or less sums up Danny Woodhead’s regard for glitz.

Over doorways, on fabric and in conversation are reminders of gratitude and humility. Plates are served with corn, baked potatoes wrapped in tinfoil and slabs of darkened, juicy steak. Before a bite is taken, grace is said as each family member holds hands on both sides of the table. Those who are late are questioned as to why. “It’s not like there’s a shrine for Danny here,” says Annette Woodhead , whose middle son, Danny, is a tailback for the New England Patriots . “He’s one of five to us.” She looks around the living room.

But he is as physical and elusive and every bit the football player, and he has proven to be just about as dangerous. The No.1 thing both of them have is theyre really smart, said Chargers running backs coach Ollie Wilson, who coached Sproles in his final three seasons as a Charger. When youre doing something outside one time, inside one time, backfield one time, thats the first thing youve got to be because you have to be able to handle all that stuff. Woodhead has so far actually been a version of Sproles that we only imagined. It is true that the bulk of Sproles six seasons in San Diego were spent in the LaDainian Tomlinson era, but even in 2009 when Tomlinson was injured and 10, after Tomlinson had departed, Sproles did not routinely touch the ball as much as Woodhead has so far. Only seven times as a Charger did Sproles have 12 or more offensive touches in a game. Woodhead has touched the ball 12 times in two of his four games as a Charger.
